This scheme is now a major Safety Concern

Hello, Cyclists now regularly use the Southbound part of the cycle path between Finsbury Park and Holloway Road as Northbound travel. This is a huge accident waiting to happen - either by a collision with another cyclist or a collision with a pedestrian from swerving. This is not an isolated incident. This has become a regular pattern of behaviour. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed unless this behaviour is cracked down on.

    Problem: Islington Council/Correspondence with Councillors

From: kevin Sent: Friday, January 5, 2024 9:17 AM To: 'Champion, Rowena' Cc: 'Heather, Gary' ; 'Shaikh, Asima' ; 'O'Sullivan, Mick' ; 'Russell, Amanda' Subject: RE: Traffic Nags Head Junction Morning Rowena Happy New Year. Thank you for your comments. I do not think it is acceptable that a scheme should be introduced that i) has been 12+ months in construction, ii) has caused utter chaos and gridlock on our roads locally at times in Holloway/Finsbury Park/Nags Head for very long periods of time, and iii) is not now being used by cyclists, in those sections that are open, should have been implemented without prior consultation and as an “experimental scheme”. We live in a democracy! Best wishes Kevin From: Champion, Rowena Sent: Friday, January 5, 2024 7:54 AM To: kevin.jordan1@blueyonder.co.uk Cc: Heather, Gary ; Shaikh, Asima ; O'Sullivan, Mick ; Russell, Amanda Subject: Traffic Nags Head Junction Dear Kevin, Thank you for sharing your concerns with me. We are working to ensure that everyone who lives in the borough has an equal opportunity to thrive, through reducing inequality, tackling climate change and air quality, providing more opportunities, and improving health and wellbeing. 85% of all trips by Islington residents are made by walking, cycling and public transport and the council is committed to enabling this to reach 90% by 2041. The changes you describe are for the Cycleway 50 scheme which will perform a key role in achieving this outcome as part of our growing network of cycleways. TfL are building Cycleway 50 as an experimental scheme. This means that once construction of the cycle lane is complete later this month TfL will hold a public consultation to gather views and monitor the impact of the scheme to understand how the additional cycling space is affecting overall road network operations, and I am sure from your comments that TfL will wish to take your concerns into account. I note your concerns and will continue to monitor feedback that we receive about the scheme. However, if you have not already done so, you can now also share your views with TfL and find out more about the background to the scheme by visiting TfL's Cycleway 50 page on their Have Your Say website https://haveyoursay.tfl.gov.uk/c50-camden-finsbury-park. TfL has said here that where people provide feedback and suggestions which they believe would make the scheme work better for all road users, they may amend their proposals. I hope you are well and wishing you all the best for 2024. I had the displeasure of driving my motorbike down (fortunately in the bus lane for me) Camden Road/Parkhurst Road/crossing over the junction of Holloway Road into Seven Sisters Road (at Nags Head) at 5.15pm this evening. The changes to the road layout recently created by TFL (primarily to facilitate cyclists, I understand) is causing utter traffic chaos/gridlock on these roads. I have never seen anything like it on the roads in London (this area) and I have been living here for the last 30 years. It is an absolute mess what TFL have done to the traffic flows around here. I would urge Islington Council please to start standing up for local residents. I am absolutely lost for words having seen/experienced this section of the roads network this evening. Please go and take a look for yourself one evening. It is an absolute disgrace! Best wishes Kevin

Problem: Where Parkhurst Road meets Hooloway Road-the result of the road layout changes has been to add congetsion/pollution and danger

Problem: Where Parkhurst Road meets Hooloway Road-the result of the road layout changes has been to add congetsion/pollution and danger to this junction that did not exist previously. Regular Gridlocked traffic. Appalingly bad tranffic planning/layout from TFL. The problem is the right filter land at the bottom of Parkhurst Road. Cars come down it and then indicate over to get into the lane to proceed down Seven Sisters Road. It has now become a highly damgerous junction, which it was never before. Well done TFL. The traffic gridlock coming down Seven Sisters Road is a result of these cycle lanes. We never had traffic gridlock like we now have. There is more pollution and congestion than ever. TFL should be ashamed of themselves for casuing such a mess.

Problem Area: Massive Regular Traffic Build up now where Hornsey Road meets Seven Sisters Road Junction

Cars used to be able to head Northbound along Hornsey Road with some vehicles waiting to turn right into Seven Sisters Road with other vehicles filtering to the left and continuing down Hornsey Road. A massive backlog of traffic is now occuring for most of the day in this lead up to the junction of Seven Sisters Road because pavement widening has blocked/narrowed the filtering lane to the left. All cars get stuck behind the vehicles waiting to turn right into Seven Sisters Road. Really poor traffic planning. Reduce the pavement size to what it was. The changes are causing massive raffic build up/congestion/pollution
