We made some emergency changes to the A21 at its junction with Sevenoaks Road to make it safer for all road users.  

We made those changes because over the last three years or so, there have been two collisions at this junction in which three people tragically lost their lives.  These collisions occurred between vehicles travelling westbound with vehicles turning in and out of this junction.  The changes were intended to keep everyone using this junction safe.  This is in line with The Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan which is central to our aim to eliminate all death and serious injuries on London’s roads. To achieve this, we must take steps to reduce road danger for everyone. 

These changes were made using an Emergency Traffic Order (ETO) so that we could introduce the changes quickly, and so that we could monitor their impact.

We are proposing permanent changes on the A21 Sevenoaks Road at the junction with London Road to improve safety permanently. 

We have been monitoring the new arrangements in the area and are now proposing new measures alongside feedback from road users.

We are proposing to:

• to reduce the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph 
• reinstate the banned right turn on the westbound A21, but to control it with new traffic signals
• keep the westbound traffic at one lane, reduced from two  

We have carried out a traffic modelling assessment to help us predict the potential impact on traffic in the vicinity of the area. 

There is likely to be minimal impact on traffic times due to the proposed change in speed limit.  

The introduction of the signals will not impact the surrounding areas with no queues likely to be blocking back in the morning and afternoon from the investigation carried out.

Following the consultation and once we review the feedback we will complete our detailed design. 

We hope to carry out the improvements in Summer 2024.

Vision Zero represents our aim to eradicate deaths and serious injuries from our roads and make London a safer, healthier and greener place by 2041.   

Major cities around the world are taking a stand to end the toll of deaths and injury seen on their roads and transport networks by committing to Vision Zero. London is at the forefront of this approach and the Mayor's Transport Strategy sets out the goal that, by 2041, all deaths and serious injuries will be eliminated from London's transport network. 

It is neither inevitable nor acceptable that anyone should be killed or seriously injured when travelling in London. When we leave our homes each day, we should feel safe and confident about the journey ahead. 

The proposals on the A21 Sevenoaks Road are part of the work we are doing towards meeting the Vision Zero.
