Section five - Rowdens Road – Junction of Goresbrook Road and the Heathway at Chequers Corner

Eight new parking spaces will be installed about 40 metres east of Rowdons Road on the southern pavement. Coombes Road will be made one-way, except for cycles, with no-entry from Goresbrook Road. See zoomed in Highway map 19 for more details.

The existing raised table that is located outside St. Martin’s Church about 20 metres east of Coombes Road will be made wider and longer. The eight angled (echelon) parking spaces located around 20 metres east of the raised table will be turned into ten parallel parking spaces (two extra spaces), to provide enough space for buses to pass each other.

The raised table opposite 33 Goresbrook Road that starts about 10 metres east of the last angled parking space will be removed to widen the road and on the southern side of the road, the twelve angled parking spaces, which start about 10 metres east of the raised table, will be changed to twelve parallel parking spaces.

On the northern side of the road, the nineteen angled parking spaces will be converted to twelve parallel parking spaces (seven spaces removed). See zoomed in Highway map 20 for more details.

Directly adjacent to the alleyway between 11 and 19a Goresbrook Road, a bus stop is proposed for westbound buses. About 25 metres further east, a bus stop for eastbound buses is proposed. About 10 metres west of this bus stop, a loading bay for businesses will be installed in place of existing angled parking (eight spaces removed). Directly opposite this loading bay, three disabled parking spaces will be installed. About 25 metres to the east of this bus stop, a ‘bus gate’ will be installed.

We propose to reinstate the vehicular access from Goresbrook Road to the junction with Chequers Lane / Heathway and Ripple Road, but for buses and emergency service vehicles only, to be enforced by camera. A raised table covering the whole of the area will be introduced. This will extend about 15 metres west into Goresbrook Road from the point the bus gate restrictions begin and covering the ‘slip road’ access from Chequers Lane/ Heathway.

There will be loss of three parking spaces from re-arrangement of the parking on the slip road. About 10 metres from the new junction of Goresbrook Road with Chequers Lane/ Heathway, a traffic light crossing will be installed, allowing people walking to cross safely at this point. Please see zoomed in Highway map 21 for details.
