The area around Oakhill Road and Keswick Road would be designated ‘shared space’ for walking and cycling. The signalised crossing would also be designated shared use for walking and cycling, therefore you can legally cycle on the footways and crossings without being required to dismount.

Shared spaces for walking and cycling are commonly used in areas with lower pedestrian and cycle flows. It’s considered to be appropriate for cycles to use these areas without dismounting. Signage will be installed to inform people that some of the footways are shared use.

Cyclists accessing the toucan crossing from Keswick Road to Oakhill Road would leave the carriageway on Oakhill Road via a proposed dropped kerb on the western side of the pavement on Keswick Road before the uncontrolled crossing. They would cross Keswick Road via the uncontrolled crossing and use the toucan crossing to cross Upper Richmond Road and re-join the carriageway via the uncontrolled crossing on the western side of Oakhill Road. From Oakhill Road to Keswick Road, cyclists on Oakhill Road would turn right on Woodlands Way and access the shared area via a dropped kerb next to the crossing on the southern side of Woodlands Way, use the toucan crossing to cross Upper Richmond Road and re join the carriageway via the uncontrolled crossing on eastern side of Oakhill Road. These routes will be supported with cycle route map type signs to guide cyclists.

We are likely proposing that the crossing will have both audible and tactile facilities but the audible signal will be switched off between the hours of 11pm and 7am. These times can be changed if necessary and the volume can also be adjusted.

We are still in consultation however and will be considering all the options.

  • Share Regarding the proposed road improvements around East Putney Station, please clarify the type of pedestrian crossing to be relocated to the west, from outside the court' to East Putney Station. I am very concerned about the noise that could constantly come from a bleeping signalised pedestrian crossing and would ask that a tactile indicator was used instead to aid any visually impaired users, especially between 11.00pm and 7.00am when less busy and nearby residents will be asleep. Given the proposed relocation will be very close to many flats, and between two other crossings, please confirm if the new pedestrian crossing will operate silently, if not 24/7 then during the night. We have taken this feedback and will report it to Network Rail who are responsible for maintaining the railway bridges.

The access to the Putney Plaza car park will remain unchanged as part of these proposals. There may be minor delays to enter or exit when the signals are in use by pedestrians, or if there are other delays in the area.
