FAQs
Why is this being proposed?
We have been working closely with Lambeth Council on a project to encourage walking and cycling between Brockwell Park and Gypsy Hill. Together with changes promoted by Lambeth Council, these proposals will help people to walk and cycle between Brockwell Park and Gypsy Hill.
Our proposals are in line with our Vision Zero strategy which aims to eradicate deaths and serious injuries from our roads.
The proposals for this scheme have been designed according to our Healthy Streets approach, which aims to make London a safer, healthier and greener place to live and travel.
Why a protected cycle facility?
Cycling is a growing mode of transport in London and this is reflected in the policies of the London Mayor. It is environmentally friendly and good exercise. Cycleways are high-quality cycle routes that link communities, businesses and destinations across London. They are easy to navigate so riders of all levels can feel safe and confident.
Haven’t you previously consulted on a similar scheme?
In 2020, TfL and Lambeth Council sought feedback from people about the proposed changes to Rosendale Road and the TLRN junction as part of the Brockwell Park to Gipsy Hill Healthy Route scheme. Due to the time that has lapsed, we have decided to undertake a focused consultation about the proposed changes at Rosendale Road junction with Thurlow Park Road (South Circular).
What will be the effect on local bus routes?
There are not expected to be any journey time changes to bus routes 201 and P13.
How does this fit in with the Lambeth Council proposals?
We have worked hard to ensure that Lambeth Council Healthy Route proposals and TfL junction proposals align.
Lambeth Council are consulting on the Experimental road changes in the West Dulwich Area, comments can be provided via https://consultation.appyway.com/Lambeth.
Lambeth Council’s consultation on the Healthy Route and controlled parking zones is now closed.
Why are you proposing to make all traffic travel straight across from Rosendale Road (northern arm)?
There are currently two lanes of traffic on the northern arm of Rosendale Road and Thurlow Park Road junction. Vehicles turning right queue in one lane whilst they wait to turn safely in a gap. Traffic in the other lane turns left and goes straight ahead. Our monitoring shows that on average, less than 20 vehicles turn left at the junction from the northern arm in the busiest times. This also increases waiting time for people wanting to cross the road, as well as delays to the bus routes and traffic using Thurlow Park Road.
The new road layout means that there will only be one lane of traffic on the northern arm of the junction. Retaining the right turn movement will either result in delays to traffic waiting to go straight ahead as they will be delayed by right turning traffic or result in delays to the bus routes and traffic using Thurlow Park Road from changing the traffic signal operation.
Won’t this direct traffic onto local roads?
We believe that the recently introduced school streets scheme in Rosendale Road and Turney Road will minimise the number of vehicles who divert onto local roads. We will work with Lambeth Council to monitor the impacts and commit to develop alternative solutions should this not be the case.
