What changes are proposed for route 42?
Route 42 currently operates between Liverpool Street station and East Dulwich (Sainsbury’s) via Tower Bridge. Performance and subsequently demand on route 42 has decreased significantly since 23 October 2021 when frequency was decreased from 12 minutes to every 15 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes. Delays crossing on the river as a result of Tower Bridge lifts has also impacted the route’s reliability. We are therefore proposing to cut route 42 back to Tooley Street to stand on Queen Elizabeth Street, south side.
If the proposals went ahead how would affected customers complete their journeys?
The high frequency route 78 which operates every 10 minutes also operates almost in parallel to route 42 from Tooley Street as far as Spitalfields. It is proposed that customers can change buses at Tooley Street to complete their journeys.
An EqIA has been undertaken on this scheme which covers the interchange stops which has identified that they have adequate lighting, shelter and seating.
Passengers that use stop AP on Appold Street (which would no longer be directly served). Customers will be able to use route 78 at the alternative stop of Bishopsgate which is within 230 metres of the current stop.
Are there any other mitigations you’re proposing to alleviate the impact on customers?
To mitigate some of the impacts on passengers, especially during off-peak times it is proposed to:
• Increase the frequency of route 42 to a bus every 20 minutes, currently it is 30 minutes Monday to Sunday (early mornings)
• Increase the frequency of route 42 to every 15 minutes, currently every 20 minutes Monday to Sunday (evenings)
• Introduce two additional early journeys on route 78, Monday to Saturdays towards Nunhead to depart Shoreditch at 05:00 and 05:20.
