Overview

We are making some changes to our services in the Barnes area, on services created following the Hammersmith Bridge closure. Since the bridge reopened to pedestrians and cycle traffic last year travel patterns in the area have changed significantly, with ridership falling on all of the services we introduced following the closure of the bridge in 2019. The changes are as follows:

  • Route 209 will be reduced in frequency from four to two buses an hour
  • Route 378 will be rerouted via Barnes Pond, continuing on to Church Road from Barnes High Street before turning right onto Rocks Lane

  • Route 378 will be rerouted via Barnes Pond, continuing on to Church Road from Barnes High Street before turning right onto Rocks Lane and then left into Mill Hill Road. This means it will no longer serve Station Road and the West of Mill Hill Road. Route 378 will also be reduced in frequency from eight to four buses an hour
  • Route 533 buses will resume serving all stops between Chiswick and Mortlake Cemetery in both directions. Buses will run every 17 minutes, instead of every 15 minutes, during morning and evening periods

Why are we making these changes?

These changes are part of our work to deliver better value for money by ensuring bus service levels more closely match demand.

We hope that by reinstating all of the stops between Chiswick and Mortlake Cemetery on route 533, more people will be encouraged to use the service, and complete their journeys on foot or by cycle.

Following works at the junction of Rocks Lane and Mill Hill Road, buses can now safely turn left. This change to the 378 provides customers accessing shops and restaurants in Barnes village better access to Putney Bridge station.

The changes are expected to be made permanent from Saturday 16 July 2022. We will keep these changes under review to ensure we continue to offer the best service we can. For more information on these and other service changes, visit our bus changes page.
