Section one – Lodge Avenue to Surmans Close

Under these proposals the junction of Maplestead Road with Lodge Avenue will be realigned to make it wider to allow buses to enter and exit it more easily. It is proposed to have a raised table (an elevated section of the road to match the height of the pavement) to slow buses entering and exiting the junction, making it easier and safer for people walking to cross here.

About 40 metres from the junction, we propose to install a bus stop for buses heading east, requiring the removal of two parking spaces. See Highway map 1 for more details.

About 90 metres further east of the bus stop, we propose to make Aconbury Road one-way and there will be no-entry from Maplestead Road, except for cycles. Both Aconbury Road and Castle Road will have raised tables at their junctions with Maplestead Road to slow vehicles, making it easier and safer for people walking to cross. A raised table will also be installed on Maplestead Road around 20m east of Castle Road. See zoomed Highway map 2 for more details.

About 50 metres east of this raised table, the right-turn off Maplestead Road (also called Maplestead Road) is proposed to have a raised table at its junction. Another raised table is proposed about 40m east of this on Maplestead Road, requiring the removal of three parking spaces. Removal of the speed cushion and reconstruction of the road 20m west of this raised table will require the removal of one parking space. See zoomed Highway map 3 for more details.

About 30 metres further east of the raised table, Maplestead Road becomes Goresbrook Road and we propose to install a bus only restriction in both directions; these are commonly known as a ‘bus gate’. This restriction will be enforced by a camera and any driver of unauthorised vehicles driven through the 'bus gate' would get a fine. This ‘bus gate’ would still be open to emergency services, as is the current situation. The parking spaces here will remain accessible. See zoomed in Highway map 4 for more details.

About 100 metres east of the bus gate, Canonsleigh Road will be made one-way with entry from Goresbrook Road. A raised table covering both these roads will be installed at this junction, along with a Zebra crossing on the eastern side of the junction, leading to a new park entrance, about 21 metres east of which, there will be a bus stop for westbound buses. See zoomed in Highway map 5 for more details.
