FAQs
Could school crossing patrols (‘lollypop ladies’) be used on the crossing?
School crossing patrols are provided by the boroughs rather than TfL. They are generally not used in locations where there is a controlled crossing as pedestrians already have priority over the traffic.
Is this the start of an FAQ section? and this answer needs a question above it?
Can speed cameras be installed on this section of the road?
In our Vision Zero Action Plan, we committed to expanding London’s safety camera network as part of efforts to reduce speed and speed-related collisions in the capital. Preparatory work is underway to ensure all essential elements are in place before new camera sites are delivered. This includes upgrading offence‑processing technology, recruiting additional enforcement staff, exploring new camera technologies to secure the most effective and future‑proof systems, and beginning the re‑letting process for our two main safety‑camera contracts.
Ahead of delivery, we will also refresh the detailed prioritisation analysis for new safety‑camera locations, using the methodology previously developed with boroughs and London Councils. This will reflect updated travel patterns, road‑user behaviour, and changes made to the network in recent years.
You may also be interested to know that TfL is working in partnership with the MPS to run Community Roadwatch, a road safety initiative which aims to reduce speeding in residential areas. Community Roadwatch gives local residents the opportunity to work side by side with their local police teams, and use speed detection equipment to identify speeding vehicles in their communities. Warning letters are issued where appropriate, and the information captured may help to inform the future activity of local police teams.
Anyone wishing to take part in Community Roadwatch, or who wishes to suggest a residential area where there are community concerns around speeding, can contact their local MPS Safer Transport Team or email CommunityRoadwatch@met.police.uk. More information can be found online on the following webpage www.tfl.gov.uk/CommunityRoadwatch.
Can the work be completed earlier than 2027?
Safety is our top priority and is the reason we are installing these interventions at this location. Before work can begin, we must complete the necessary planning and design stages to ensure the scheme can be delivered safely. Our current programme shows that 2027 is the earliest opportunity for installation, and construction is unlikely to start until the A23 Streatham Hill Transformational works are complete in spring 2027, due to network capacity constraints and the need to maintain overall network resilience.
