Walking and cycling enhancements to A205 Christchurch Road and Hillside Road
What are we doing?

We are improving the walking and cycling routes along the A205 South Circular (Christchurch Road) and Hillside Road by:
- Building a new toucan crossing (a type of crossing that allows both pedestrians and cyclists to cross at the same time, controlled by traffic light) east of the junction with Hillside Road. The new crossing will enable a safe cycle route as part of the Cycleway 48 between Roycroft Close and Hillside Road, and better serve pupils of City Heights E-ACT Academy.
- Relocating an existing pelican crossing (a type of pedestrian crossing with traffic lights that is activated by pressing a button) 80 metres further west, closer to the entrance of Fenstanton Primary School to better reflect where people would prefer to cross the road.
- Constructing a raised section of the road at the entrance to Hillside Road to slow vehicle movements and improve safety at the junction.
Why are we doing it?
Between 2016 and 2024, 14 accidents have been recorded within the scheme area, adjacent to two schools. The current arrangements can be improved to better meet the needs of children and cyclists, and prevent future accidents.
What will the impacts be?
The changes may cause temporary disruption during construction, however impacts will be minimised by providing advanced noticing and sharing of information, and by maintaining road safety and personal safety during our temporary traffic management. Once the project is complete, our transport modelling shows that there would be minimal impact on traffic flow in the area. The scheme is designed to encourage vehicles to slow down on the approach to the improved crossings and junction. To make way for the new raised section of the road at the entrance to Hillside Road, one existing parking bay will be removed.
When will we start to build it?
We currently expect to start construction in 2027, once nearby major works have been completed. We will carefully plan and coordinate our works with other activity in the area to avoid overlap and minimise disruption. Residents will be notified in advance of any activity. The work may cause some temporary disruption during construction, but we will keep this to a minimum by giving advanced notice and ensuring safety is maintained throughout.
