Overview

Cycleway 62 has been developed by TfL in partnership with Southwark Council to provide a new cycle route connecting Rotherhithe and Peckham. Southwark Council will be building the majority of the cycleway and we will be building the southern section of the route on Ilderton Road and across Old Kent Road. It will have a new two-way segregated cycle track, before intersecting with Old Kent Road where the route crosses over into Brimmington Park.

The purpose of the scheme

We have developed a scheme to accommodate Cycleway 62 at the Ilderton Road/Old Kent Road junction. This means that the signalled junction will provide a movement for cyclists between Brimmington Park and Ilderton Road across Old Kent Road. There will be no other changes to the operation of this junction.

We will be building:

  • A new two-way cycle track on part of Ilderton Road which will link with Cycleway 62
  • New cycle crossing on Old Kent Road which will allow cyclists to safely travel from Brimmington Park to Ilderton Road. This new cycle movement will be signal controlled and operate within the existing junction configuration.
  • New signal phasing which will increase the overall green time for pedestrians to cross the junction

There will be no changes to the numbers of lanes along the Old Kent Road. Access will be retained to the vehicle forecourt on Ilderton Road via a crossover on the proposed two-way cycle track.

Goals of the scheme:

  • Green Link: A cycling route that connects parks and green spaces
  • Promotion of cycling: The plan promotes cycling as a way to reduce air and noise pollution
  • Network: Create a network of safe and accessible streets and routes for everyone
  • Health: Make cycling a healthy choice for people to get around

  • Share So glad to see more cycle lanes especially on dangerous roads. Are there plans to have one-way lanes on each side of the road, similarly to Copenhagen? I find that on the large double lanes people tend to speed and overtake in each direction a lot. Also, it's often hard to get to the other side of the road if it's done "highway style". on Facebook Share So glad to see more cycle lanes especially on dangerous roads. We do not have these available at a TfL office, however, please do get in touch with Southwark Council directly to enquire about viewing availability in other public buildings.

Cyclists using Old Kent Road will be able to access the new route with the existing traffic phasing.

The changes proposed as part of this scheme are not expected to impact bus journey times.
