Lambeth Bridge to Chelsea Bridge walking and cycling changes

In June and July 2020 we made temporary changes to the Cycle Superhighway 8 Phase 1 (CS8) between the north end of Lambeth Bridge and Chelsea Bridge in order to make it easier for people to cycle, walk and use the bus. We recently decided to keep these changes as part of an experiment, to further test the scheme for up to 18 months.

Why we made these changes

The CS8 cycle lane was originally built in 2010 and is a key strategic cycle corridor to bring cyclists safely into central London. In 2020 we delivered a number of temporary changes to the scheme as part of our emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic. As London continues to recover from the pandemic it will be more important than ever to support and encourage everyone who can to be more active. Active travel can make people healthier and happier, and it plays a part in managing and reducing congestion as well as improving our environment.

One of the changes we introduced was to ban traffic from turning left into Chelsea Bridge from Grosvenor Road. As with other changes we introduced, the purpose was to provide better protection to people cycling: in the three years before the scheme was introduced 10 people cycling at this junction were hurt in collisions, including one person who was tragically killed by a HGV truck turning into Chelsea Bridge. Physically segregating cyclists by banning the left turn onto Chelsea Bridge means we can keep people safe.
