Summary of changes for Lee High Road
- Extend the existing eastbound bus lane on the A20 Lee High Road by 140m towards Lee Church Street, to help bus passengers reach their destination more quickly
- Change single red lines to double red lines in the eastbound carriageway between Lee Church Street and Dacre Park and Lee Park and Brightfield Road
- Change existing single red lines to double red lines in the westbound carriageway between 370 Lee High Road and Bankwell Road
- The existing eastbound cycle lane between the junction of Lee High Road with Brightfield Road and Lenham Park will be widened and made ‘mandatory’ to help improve cyclist safety. Mandatory cycle lanes are separated from general traffic with a white solid line, and fines can be issued if drivers enter it
- Widened pedestrian refuges outside 285 and 344 Lee High Road to make it easier to cross the road
- Introduction of three cycle wands alongside the new mandatory cycle lane to help protect vulnerable road users
- Removal of 1 parking and 2 loading & Blue Badge Holder (BBH) bays:
- Parking outside number 320 - 324 Lee High Road
- Loading & BBH outside number 350 Lee High Road
- Loading & BBH outside number 309 - 315 Lee High Road

Why?
The Mayor of London is committed to tackling air pollution, promoting public transport and making our streets safer. The Mayor’s Transport Strategy sets a target for 80% of trips to be made via walking, cycling or public transport by 2041.
The new bus lane will be open to buses and other modes of transport such as pedal cyclists, motorbikes, taxis, and patient transport vehicles - and is part of a target to introduce 25km of new bus lanes on London’s roads by March 2025.
Bus lanes are one of the most effective methods of helping people reach their destinations quickly and sustainably. Buses using these lanes can avoid slower moving traffic, so they can reach and pick up passengers at the next stop more quickly. There will also be additional safety benefits for vulnerable road users such as pedal cyclists and motorcyclists, as they do not need to mix with all traffic.
Buses are the most space efficient transport - with over 60 people travelling in a single vehicle - meaning emissions from up to 60 private vehicles are removed from London’s roads. Additionally, the next generation of buses are zero emission, making London’s air cleaner.
How it impacts you

The implementation of bus lanes will have different impacts based on which mode of transport you are travelling by:
- If you are travelling by bus - You will be positively impacted, as you should get to your destination more quickly
- If you are travelling by car, van, or HGV - We expect you would not notice any impacts on your journey. The location of this bus lane has been chosen as it has high potential for bus journey time improvements with low potential for delays to other traffic
- If you are travelling by Motorcycle - You could see some positive impacts, especially around journey times and safety, as motorcyclists are permitted to use these new bus lanes
- If you are travelling by cycle - You could see positive impacts, especially around journey times and safety as bikes are permitted to use these new bus lanes and the new mandatory cycle lanes

Equalities Impact Assessment
Our draft Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) identifies:
- The impact the scheme is having on people, including those with protected characteristics
- How we have attempted to mitigate any negative impacts
After we’ve considered all comments, the EqIA will be reviewed and may be updated.
We use the EqIA to help us decide if, and how, we should proceed with these proposals.

Latest news
Update 5 December 2024
We have now published our consultation report which explains the outcome of the consultation.
We received 509 responses to the consultation and would like to thank everyone who took part.
Taking on board all the feedback received, we are content that this scheme, which is part of the Department for Transport-funded ‘25x25’ programme (which aims to deliver 25km of new bus lanes by March 2025) will benefit all people choosing to travel on the bus network to have the safest, quickest, and most reliable journey at all times of the day.
