Why are the bus lane timings "at all times"?

    The existing bus lane timings are “at all times” so we have kept a consistent approach with our new proposals.

    Why are there no plans for cycle lanes along Lower Clapton Road?

    This project is focussed on achieving benefits for buses and unfortunately the road space does not enable the addition of a cycle lane. However, blue surfacing is provided for cyclists leaving the cycleway 23 facility and then they will be encouraged to join the bus lane throughout the extent of our proposals.

    In addition to the countdown timers at signals, will the phasing be improved to allow for more time to cross?

    Following further investigation and engagement with our signals team, we will not be extending the signal timer phasing for the following reasons:

    • When the green man stops there is a black out system activated that holds traffic on red and gives an additional 3 to 4 seconds for pedestrians to complete their crossing before the red man shows
    • Following this there is an additional 2 seconds where everything stays on red before the signals turn to amber
    • This is designed to give time for pedestrians to complete their crossing (not start to cross)

    What’s the justification for reducing disabled parking on this part of Red Route, which is full of shops and places I need to go?

    Parking/loading surveys were undertaken as part of our investigations and highlighted the fact that they are already rarely at full capacity. An 8m length of blue badge parking will be removed as part of the proposals and there are two further disabled parking bays to be removed. That being said, 46 m of parking, loading and blue badge holder parking bays will remain along this section of Lower Clapton Road.

    What’s the justification for reducing loading on this part of Red Route, which is full of shops and it’s a necessity that I can receive goods on a daily basis?

    Parking/loading surveys were undertaken as part of our investigations and highlighted the fact that they are already rarely at full capacity. Because of this, and the fact that 160m of bays are being retained along this corridor, we don’t envisage any serious negative impacts on parking/loading. Engagement has also taken place with freight associations in order to mitigate against concerns early in the design process.

    Who have you talked to about this already and what changes have you made, if any, following feedback?

    - Local businesses

    No major changes were made following the engagement with external stakeholders however a number of important considerations were highlighted. For example, contacts were provided by the freight associations so that we could get a better understanding of existing servicing arrangements along this route.

    How does moving the bus stops impact on people who want to interchange? Does this make it more difficult?

    Two bus stops are being relocated a maximum of 34m from the existing location. This is to help increase lengths of existing bus lane and provide new lengths of bus lane. All existing bus stops are being maintained and no disruption to bus passengers journey times is anticipated.
