How these proposals may change your bus journey

Bus route 394

Our proposal is designed to ensure we can support increased demand for bus services within the development as new homes are occupied and businesses are opened.

  • The extension of route 394 to King’s Cross Central would provide direct access to public transport through the heart of the development; helping to ensure that all areas are within 400 metres of a bus stop
  • The extension would also provide a new bus route on the western end of Copenhagen Street, a section of road on which no bus routes currently run
  • The proposal would create new bus journey opportunities between King’s Cross Central, Copenhagen Street and locations such as Angel, Hackney and Homerton Hospital

What is the route the 394 bus takes at the moment?

  • Bus route 394 currently terminates at Tolpuddle Street in Angel. It gets there by traveling on City Road and Pentonville Road where it turns right into Penton Street and then right into Tolpuddle Street
  • From its terminus on Tolpuddle Street, it turns right into Liverpool Road, then right again into Islington High Street, before turning left onto City Road where it follows the same roads in both directions to and from its other terminus at Homerton Hospital

What are the proposed changes?

  • The proposal to extend the route means that it would be able to operate two-way on Islington High Street, Liverpool Road and Tolpuddle Street. Therefore, it would no longer serve stop R on Pentonville Road. However, passengers would be able to use the previous stop, J, on City Road, which is approximately 220 metres from stop R
  • The current last bus stop for route 394 on Tolpuddle Street would no longer be served. However, passengers would be able to alight at stop Z which is opposite the current last stop at the same location
  • The extended route would serve existing stops on Barnsbury Road, the eastern section of Copenhagen Street and York Way
  • New stops would be placed within the King’s Cross Central development, including the first and last stop which would be located on Canal Reach
  • We are also working with the London Borough of Islington on a proposal to site a pair of new bus stops on the western section of Copenhagen Street for the extended route 394
  • The maps below shows the planned routeing of the extension and the indicative location of new bus stops. Proposed bus stop names and locations are indicative for consultation purposes

Towards King’s Cross Central, the proposed extension would run on the following roads from Tolpuddle Street, Islington

  • Barnsbury Road, Copenhagen Street, York Way and Canal Reach in King's Cross Central where it would terminate

Towards Homerton Hospital, the proposed extension would run on the following roads

  • Canal Reach, Handyside Street, Copenhagen Street, Barnsbury Street and Tolpuddle Street where it would continue on its current routeing to Homerton Hospital

To help provide a level of service that better matches the number of passengers using the route, we have existing plans to decrease frequencies on weekdays and Saturdays so buses will arrive every 15 minutes instead of every 12 minutes. We are also planning to increase frequencies on Sundays so that buses run every 15 minutes instead of every 20 minutes. This will help to ensure that a consistent level of service is provided on all days of the week. There is no confirmed date for the frequency changes at this stage.
