Consultation update 24 February 2022

We are now able to publish our report on the outcomes of our public consultation on our proposals to install a new signalised pedestrian crossing and reduce the speed limit on the A23 Streatham High Road, close to the Tesco Extra supermarket. The consultation ran from 30 September to 11 November 2021 and we received 271 responses. You can find the consultation report in the ‘Documents’ section of this web page.

Having considered all the responses carefully, subject to funding becoming available, we intend to proceed with the proposals as set out in the consultation materials.

Overall, the response to the proposals was positive although some concerns were raised about possible increased congestion in the area. Our response to this and other commonly raised issues is included in Appendix A of the report.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation.

Overview

We are proposing to introduce a new staggered pedestrian crossing on the A23 Streatham High Road, outside the Tesco Extra supermarket. There are a high number of pedestrians wishing to cross the road at this location to make their way between the supermarket and the southbound bus stops. We have also observed that this location has a history of high numbers of collisions, often involving vulnerable road users (such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists). We also propose to reduce the speed limit on this stretch of the High Road to 20mph - currently the speed limit is 30mph.

These proposals would be further supported by:

  • A new section of northbound bus lane north between Station Approach and Gleneagle Road
  • Extended Keep Clear markings across Natal Road
  • A change to lane markings on approach to Gleneagle Road
  • Minor changes to bus stops to facilitate changes

You can see a map of the proposed scheme in the ‘Documents’ section of this web page.

Purpose of the scheme

The purpose of these proposals is primarily to reduce collisions at this location, supporting the Mayor’s Vision Zero objective to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on London’s streets by 2041. The scheme also supports the principles of the Mayor’s Healthy Streets initiative, intended to encourage Londoners to walk and cycle more by providing more comfortable facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The Healthy Streets check for this scheme can be found in the ‘Documents’ section.
