Thank you to everyone who took the time to look through our plans and submit questions. We have looked through all of these and have created a ‘frequently asked questions’ document which provides answers to the questions that we received.

Construction is due to commence in September 2023

We plan to make improvements to the zebra crossing at the junction of Thurlow Park Road and Lancaster Avenue. This will help to improve the safety and the environment for those using the crossing.

The purpose of the scheme:

Observations noted during a site visit, speed surveys and feedback received from stakeholders indicates that traffic in the area is travelling at or above the current speed limit of 30mph. We are aware that vehicles undertake and overtake in an unsafe manner, with traffic on the A205 merging into single lane within a short distance of the junction. Vehicles also appear to overtake each other on approach to the crossing. The aim of this scheme is to improve safety for pedestrians in this area by developing the pedestrian crossing environment and slowing the speed of traffic on approach to the crossing itself.

The proposals include:

  • Realignment of the zebra crossing on the A205 to create a straight-across zebra crossing
  • Build-out of the pavement around the crossing which will reduce the road a single lane. This will help to prevent overtaking on the approach to the crossing and reduce vehicle speeds
  • A small build-out of the kerb line at Lancaster Avenue to reduce the speed of turning vehicles
  • Introduction of new mandatory cycle lanes marked by light segregation

Listening to you:

We are currently developing the detailed design for the scheme and intend to deliver the improvements at the crossing in the second half of 2023.
