Gyratory - a large, multi-lane traffic junction or one-way network that forces vehicles to travel in a circular direction around a central area

Bus stop buildout - An extension of the pavement into the parking lane which allows buses to pick up passengers without pulling out of the traffic flow

Carriageway bays - A marked section of the main road used for vehicles, can be a general parking space or operational space

Pedestrian Desire Line - This is a term for the unofficial and intuitive pathways directed by pedestrians through repeatedly taking the most direct route instead of following formal walkways

We decided not to proceed with the Wandsworth Town gyratory removal scheme because the cost of building it, together with its impact on journey times elsewhere on the road network, meant it did not offer sufficient value for money.

The carriageway bays, also known as loading or parking bays, are not all being removed, some are being changed and others are being relocated. Further details for specific affected carriageway bays can be found in our Proposals section or on our Maps.

These proposals focus on improvements that can be delivered in the medium term and respond to the issues people told us were most important in Wandsworth town centre, including crowded footways, crossing facilities and bus reliability. The current proposals include some targeted improvements for people cycling, especially where they connect existing routes, namely Cycleway 8. We would like to recognise there is interest in further cycling improvements, and these will continue to be considered as part of the wider discussions about the future of the town centre.

We remain committed to working with Wandsworth Council and local communities to understand how the town centre could continue to develop in the future. However, these current proposals are aimed at addressing current transport issues and provide benefits in the nearer term whilst supporting future opportunities as the area grows and develops. Any longer-term proposals are subject to further development, consultation and dependent on the availability of funding. We'll ensure to keep the community updated of future schemes we develop for the longer term.

Wandsworth town centre is a complex area with a range of transport, business and community needs that need to be carefully balanced. Over the recent years, we have worked closely with Wandsworth Council to better understand local priorities and consider a range of options for improving the area. This has taken time to ensure that the proposals being consulted on do not result in increased congestion, are deliverable and respond to the issues raised by local people and stakeholders.
