Frequently Asked Questions
What do you look for specifically? Any professional experience?
This is not like a regular job application where you have more of a chance with more skills and paid experiences. Our strength as a Youth Panel comes from a diversity of backgrounds, lived experiences, and interests beyond transport!
What we want to see is a demonstration that you are passionate about the cause, that you truly understand the purpose of the Youth Panel and that you are really wanting to contribute to the Youth Panel from your unique perspective. Don’t worry about using fancy words or acting in a particular way. Just be honest and be yourself!
I am not yet sure what my timetable will look like, can I still apply?
While we know that 100% attendance over a year will not be possible, we do ask that you only apply if you will regularly be available from 5-8pm on Wednesday evenings.
General Meetings are the core of our time together, not only for problem solving but building meaningful friendships!
I live in Outer London. Can I still apply?
Absolutely! Whether you live in Zone 1 or 8, it makes no difference where exactly in London: all are welcome.
If I do not get in this year, can I reapply?
Definitely- some of our current panellists reapplied in the past! There are no restrictions on applying again if you were unsuccessful the first time, so long as you still meet the other requirements ie. You will be 16-25 years old when you start with the Panel and you are London based.
Are there any costs to be involved?
None! While the Youth Panel is a volunteer (unpaid) programme, you will never be expected to pay anything to be involved. This means that all travel, food, drink and any other required support for you to be comfortable and participate will be paid for by TfL.
What technology do I need to participate?
For our bimonthly general meetings, no technology is needed. Outside of these meetings, the Youth Panel communicates through WhatsApp and sometimes holds workshops through Microsoft Teams and Zoom Call- you should be fine with any device with internet whether a phone, tablet, or laptop.
Who will help me settle in?
Paula, our Youth Panel facilitator with an Enhanced DBS, is committed to building a friendly, creative, and safe environment for all, including sorting adjustments or helping you explore a specific passion!
Can I use AI for this application?
While our team acknowledges AI as a useful tool to sort out your thoughts, we believe passion shines through best in your own words!
This year we included prompts to each of our application questions to help you get started.
