Consultation has concluded

We are now able to publish our report on the outcomes of our public consultation on proposals to make pedestrian safety improvements at the junction of Blackheath Hill, Greenwich South Street and Lewisham Road. The proposals include new light controlled pedestrian crossings on the A2 Blackheath Hill on the eastern arm of the junction, outside the George and Dragon pub, and across the ‘slip road’ used by traffic turning left from Greenwich South Street onto Blackheath Hill. In order for the junction to accommodate the new crossings and operate efficiently, we will need to prevent traffic from turning right from Lewisham Road onto Blackheath Hill.

We received 357 responses to the consultation and would like to thank everyone who took part. Our consultation report includes our responses to the issues raised by those who responded.

Having considered all the responses carefully, we have decided to proceed with our proposals as set out in the consultation. We hope to deliver the work on site during the summer of 2024.

What are we proposing?

The junction currently does not have any formal pedestrian crossing facilities, and so we have developed a new proposal to address this and make crossing the A2 Blackheath Hill safer and more comfortable for pedestrians.

We propose the installation of a ‘straight across’ light controlled pedestrian crossing across Blackheath Hill (outside the George and Dragon pub), as well as across the ‘slip road’ used by traffic turning left onto Blackheath Hill from Greenwich South Street.

In order to ensure that these new measures would not cause delays to the road network, including to bus journeys, we would need to ban traffic from turning right onto the A2 Blackheath Hill from Lewisham Road.

Connecting with London's deaf community on our consultations 

To enhance how we engage and consult with London's deaf community we are trialling a British Sign Language (BSL) consultation conversation service. This service will allow us to have a two-way BSL translated discussion on any aspect of this consultation with a BSL speaker.

Following this trial, we will evaluate the service to determine if this is something we are able to offer on other consultations in the future.
