A23 Brixton Hill junction with St Saviour's Road

Project update:

Thank you to everyone who took the time to look through our plans and submit questions. We have looked through all of these and have created a ‘frequently asked questions’ document which provides answers to the questions that we received.

Construction is due to commence in late-May 2024 and we will write to residents and businesses nearer the time to provide more information about how this may impact them.

The purpose of the scheme:

The A23 Brixton Hill is a part of the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) and is a busy strategic corridor connecting areas such as Kennington, Brixton, and Streatham. The junction of Brixton Hill junction with St Saviour's Road is located just south of Brixton town centre.

Our studies have shown that there have been a number of collisions around this junction, including a fatal accident in 2020. The Mayor is committed to improving road safety and eliminating road casualties and death from London’s roads by 2041 as set out in his Vision Zero Approach. We have been reviewing what we can do to improve safety at the Brixton Hill/St Saviour's Road junction to reduce the casualty risk at this junction. Observations from site visits and feedback that we have received from stakeholders have helped us to develop plans to improve safety for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposals include:

• We propose to introduce a new four metre-wide pedestrian crossing across Brixton Hill close to the junction with St Saviour's Road. At present, there is a large gap between pedestrian crossings on Brixton Hill at this location and so the new crossing will provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists wishing to cross the busy A23. It will also improve much needed direct footfall for local businesses.
• A build out of the pavement on the northeast side of the crossing to allow adequate space for waiting pedestrians
• St Saviour’s Road to become entry-only to motor traffic from the A23 Brixton Hill. Drivers would exit via Blenheim Gardens. Cyclists will still be able to travel in both directions along St Saviour's Road
• Blenheim Gardens bus stop (Stop BW) will move 4.3m, from outside number 106 to outside number 108 Brixton Hill. This will allow buses to pass the loading bay when occupied.
• A layby which serves for loading and disabled parking will be moved slightly to accommodate the new crossing. It will be moved from 99 to 109 Brixton Hill, to 95 to 103 Brixton Hill.
• We will plant two new trees and install four new cycle stands
