Aldgate – changes to bus routes

Proposals

We are proposing a new start and end point for bus route 343. The route would start and finish at Goodman’s Yard, Tower Gateway. The route would no longer travel to Aldgate bus station.

If bus route 343 did not travel to Aldgate bus station, this would make space for an additional route to serve the northbound stop in the bus station. This allows us to propose a re-route of the 15 via Aldgate bus station to provide a common stop with route 115 for trips between Aldgate and Blackwall DLR station.

Our proposal to move the bus stop for route 15, also allows us to change the first stop on route 254 to Aldgate High Street. This would provide customers with a common stop for route 254 and route 25 for passengers travelling between Aldgate and Whitechapel station.

The proposed changes to route 343 would allow us to provide common stops for several destinations for the 15 and 115 as well as 25 and 254.

Impact on journeys

The scheme impacts from the EqIA which are set out below:

Positive impacts

Re-routeing the 15 via Aldgate bus station could provide better interchange with London Underground services and serving stop L in the bus station provides a new common stop for more than 500 passengers who board buses in Aldgate and travel between Aldgate and Blackwall (common section on routes 15 and 115).

Moving route 254 from Aldgate Bus station to the bus stop on Aldgate High Street creates a common stop with route 25 for passengers travelling from Aldgate to Whitechapel. The bus stop is 80 metres from the bus stop in Aldgate Bus station and requires crossing Aldgate High Street, which can be accessed by a signalised crossing.
Some passengers from all protected characteristics may have less of a walk or a shorter interchange considering their current journey.

New bus stopping possible impacts

Changing route 343 to start and finish at Tower Gateway impacts around 1,000 trips, which is approximately 5% of the passengers. These passengers would still be able to change buses onto routes 42, 78 to complete their journey or alternatively walk up to 500 metres to Aldgate Station or stops on Minories/Mansell Street.

Route 15 passengers who get on and off the bus at stop S on Mansell Street may need to walk to or from the stop to access stop L in the bus station (up to 300 metres).

Some passengers from all protected characteristics may have longer to walk or a longer interchange considering their current journey.

Some passengers may feel unsafe changing buses in the dark or waiting for a bus in the dark.

Interchanging

Passengers changing buses from the 343 traveling to or from Aldgate Bus station would need to use bus routes 42 or 78 to start or finish their journey.

For journeys towards Aldgate bus station, same-stop interchange would be available at two stops on Mansell Street (Stop TE) and Tower Bridge Road between route 343 and 42 or 78. Both stops have a shelter with seating. Neither of these stops has a Countdown sign fitted.

For journeys towards London Bridge, same-stop interchange would be available at two stops on Tower Bridge Road (Stop L) and Minories (stop TC) from routes 42, 78 to route 343. Stop TC has a shelter with seating and stop L does not. Neither of these stops has a Countdown sign fitted.

Route 254

Passengers using the possible new first stop for route 254, would need to cross Aldgate High Street, using a signalised crossing to the new proposed first stop.

Route 15

Route 15 passengers that board or alight at stop S on Mansell Street may need to walk to or from the stop to access stop L in the bus station (up to 300 metres).
