Overview

We are asking for your views on changing the route of the R7 bus in Chelsfield Village from 6 November 2021, so it misses out some stops to improve reliability, the predictability of travel times and has shorter journeys. The stops no longer served would be:

  • Bucks Cross Road
  • Maypole Road/Jubilee Road
  • Hewitts Road/Maypole Bo Peep Public House

See the map in the ‘Documents’ section for where these stops are and the new route along Church Road in Chelsfield Village, Bromley.

Our proposal in more detail

Following consultation and requests in 2016 we extended the route from Orpington to Chelsfield Village, increased the frequency and added a Sunday service on 1 April 2017.

Unfortunately this has led to delays and unreliable journey times. So we propose to keep the extension but miss out the ‘loop’ that is causing delays.

We want you to have your say about the re-routing of the R7 and in the process closing three bus stops. Some bus users will need to travel further for their nearest bus stop while gaining improved/faster journey times and improved reliability/better predicted travel times.

The new route would miss out the stops on Bucks Cross Road, Maypole Road/Jubilee Road and Hewitts Road/Maypole Bo Peep Public House would be unserved. Currently these stops are served in one direction only as the bus turns at Chelsfield, Five Bells.

By missing out the ‘loop’ no changes would be proposed to the frequency of the R7. The R7 operates between Chelsfield, Five Bells and Chislehurst High Street half hourly Monday to Saturday and hourly Sundays and all evenings.

New schedules were introduced in April 2019 to help with reliability but these haven’t worked as well as we had expected. If the current route is maintained the analysis shows that additional time is required, meaning reducing frequency of the route.

Equalities Impact Assessment

We have undertaken an Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA). The EqIA examines what impact (positive or negative) the proposed route change may have on customers with characteristics protected by the Equality Act 2010.

We consider the impacts of bus service change proposals on equality groups throughout the planning process ensuring, where possible, effective mitigations are in place where no viable alternative is available. The EqIA can be found in the ‘Documents’ section.
