Colliers Wood to Balham walking and cycling changes
Update 16 July 2024
We have recently begun and expect shortly to complete the following essential works as a first phase of improvements to this scheme:
- Installing new bay usage signs with restriction changes (Loading and/or Loading with Disabled parking) and installing some new signposts
- Installing some new bays and re-painting bay markings where needed to match the restrictions. Bay lengths will remain the same
- Installing double red lines to prevent stopping where it is unsafe to do so
To address the drainage, bus shelter, and road surface concerns we are planning to undertake a second phase of improvement works in Spring 2025. We have included the second phase works on our update of 27 September 2023. We will continue to keep the local community up to date as our plans are confirmed. Once the second phase of works is complete we will hold a consultation to give the community opportunity to tell us about their experiences of the scheme, and specifically if it causes issues that we might address
We have also today published a monitoring report which summarises data we have gathered on cycling rates, bus journey times and road safety on the A24 between Balham and Colliers Wood. We have also made some changes to this web page, including providing this update, to reflect the time that has passed since we first introduced the scheme.

Overview
In July and August 2020 we made changes to the Cycle Superhighway 7 (CS7) between Balham High Road and Colliers Wood in order to make it easier for people to cycle, walk and use the bus.
This page provides you with information on what has happened so far with the scheme, and our plans, including for engagement and consultation.

Why we made these changes
In July and August 2020 we delivered several temporary changes to the scheme as part of our emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic. Active travel can make people healthier and happier, and it plays a part in managing and reducing congestion as well as improving our environment.
The changes were made to keep people cycling safely: in the three years before the scheme was introduced 126 people cycling on the A24 were hurt in collisions; 19 people were seriously injured.

Listening to you
Since July 2020, when this scheme was first introduced, we asked local people to tell us about their experiences of it.
In September 2023 we published an update which described improvements we are now beginning to make to this scheme, and that these improvements would be delivered over two phases. These improvements were designed to address issues raised by local people while also maintaining the benefits of the scheme to cyclists, pedestrians and bus passengers. The first phase of improvements is almost complete, and the second phase will be undertaken in early 2025. Once the second phase of improvements is complete we will hold a consultation to give the community opportunity to tell us about their experiences of the scheme, and specifically if it causes issues that we might address.
