Consultation has concluded

Update 25 September 2023  

Between 10 May and 10 November 2022, we consulted on experimental changes we made to Mansell Street. A new cycle lane was introduced to provide a link between Cycleway 2 on Whitechapel High Street and Cycleway 3 on Royal Mint Street, with the intention of making it easier, safer and more pleasant to walk and cycle on Mansell Street.  

Our consultation focused on the effects that the scheme was having on specific matters, such as cycling, walking, safety, traffic flow and the environment, and what the future of the scheme should be after the experiment finished. 

We have now published our Consultation Report to explain the outcomes of the consultation. 

Next steps 

We have reviewed the findings from the consultation closely, along with our monitoring data of the scheme, to help us determine the best way forward for this scheme. We have decided to retain the scheme on a permanent basis.

Overview

We have introduced a new cycle lane along Mansell Street as part of an experimental traffic scheme. The new cycle lane provides a link between Cycleway 2 on Whitechapel High Street and Cycleway 3 on Royal Mint Street. 

We want to know your views and experiences of the experiment. We are holding a six-month consultation on the Mansell Street experimental scheme. You can reply by following the link to the survey below. We want this consultation to be accessible to everyone.

The purpose of this scheme 

Enabling walking and cycling

We are working with London’s local authorities to provide more cycling infrastructure and improved spaces for people walking. We’re doing this because we want to encourage everyone who can to walk and cycle whenever possible. ‘Active travel’ has huge health and well-being benefits, and if more people walked, cycled or used public transport in London, there would be less congestion and our air would be cleaner. Schemes like this one will help support London’s growth and ongoing recovery from the coronavirus. 

Mansell Street is a key strategic cycling corridor and is in the top 5% for current and future cycling demand in London. Creating a safer cycling corridor here will provide a link between Cycleway 2 on Whitechapel High Street and Cycleway 3 on Royal Mint Street and is likely to increase cycling demand. 

Keeping people safe

In the three years up to July 2020 four people were seriously injured in collisions on or near Mansell Street, and one person tragically was killed.

    The page says "The consultation on this scheme is open for six months, and we expect your views and experiences could change over time. Please feel free to respond more than once if that is the case." but when I got to fill it in now, no survey appears and the page says "Thank you for submitting". I filled in the survey after my first ride down Mansell street but now after many, many more rides I have more to say. How can I fill in the survey again?
