We are proposing changes to bus routes 283, 72 and N72.
Use the following buttons to find out more about what is proposed and how to have your say.
You have until Sunday7 September 2025 to give us your feedback.
Proposals
We would like to:
Withdraw route 283 between Hammersmith Bus Station and East Acton
Reroute route 72 via White City Estate. This would ensure that we are able to provide a service to passengers along the withdrawn section of the 283
Please refer to the map below for the proposed route changes.
To make sure the frequency of buses in service between Hammersmith and East Acton is sufficient to meet demand, we also propose to increase the route 72 Saturday and Sunday early morning frequencies to every 15 minutes.
Both routes currently operate at a high frequency of six buses per hour, and are routes where passengers tend to not look at the timetable before arriving at the stop.
Currently the services run as follows:
Route 283 currently operates between Hammersmith Bus Station and East Acton, primarily serving Shepherd’s Bush Green, White City Estate and Hammersmith Hospital with single-deck buses. It is served by a bus every 10 minutes Monday to Saturday daytimes and every 12 minutes Sundays and evenings
Route 72 currently operates between Hammersmith Bridge, North Side and East Acton, Brunel Road, primarily serving Shepherd’s Bush Green, White City Station and Hammersmith Hospital with single-deck buses. It is served by a bus every 10 minutes Monday to Saturday day times and every 12 minutes Sundays and evenings.
Please refer to the map below for the current routes.
Withdrawing route 283 and re-routeing the 72 would help to better match capacity to demand. It would also rationalise and simplify the network while making savings to help meet financial targets.
London’s bus network is our most affordable, accessible, and available form of public transport and offers the main sustainable alternative to cars for those journeys that cannot easily be walked or cycled. It is also London’s most flexible mode of public transport.
We continuously review and adapt the bus network to reflect changing customer needs. This includes proposing changes to existing bus routes, so services operate in areas where our customers need them most.
Read more about how we are increasing the number of bus journeys by making bus travel better, faster and greener in our Bus action plan.
If you currently use the 283, you would still be able to complete journeys with the proposed 72 route as all stops will still be served
If you currently use the 72, you may have to change for the 220 or 272 to complete your journey to White City Station
Passengers wishing to access Hammersmith Hospital and Queen Charlotte & Chelsea Hospital can still do so using routes 7, 70, 72 and 272
Journeys between East Acton/Du Cane Road and Hammersmith will increase by up to 10 minutes due to the longer routeing via the White City Estate
Journey times for passengers travelling between Brunel Road and Shepherd’s Bush Green would increase by up to 10 minutes in each direction. For shorter trips route 272 provides a direct connection (Click on map for larger version)
We have carried out an Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) for the bus service changes. – The key impact highlighted by the EqIA across all protected characteristics is the increased need for interchange to complete some journeys. The key mitigations for this are as follows:
There are identified interchange points for trips to/from the stops on Wood Lane no longer served by route 72 which are at Blythe Road stop A (Southbound) where shelters and real time information are provided and Blythe Road stop D (Northbound) where shelters and real time information are provided
There are identified interchange points for trips to/from the stops at Brunel Road that are no longer served by route 72 which are at East Acton station/ Fitzneal Street stop C (eastbound) where shelters and real time information are provided and East Acton station/ Fitzneal Street stop H (westbound) where a shelter is provided
The ‘Hopper’ Fare provides the ability to make a second journey within 60 minutes of boarding the first bus and will limit the financial impacts of having to change bus
