Emergency changes at the junction of the A21 and Sevenoaks Road

Introduction

We will be making changes to A21 at its junction with Sevenoaks Road (commonly known as London Road) to make it safer for all road users. The changes will be made using an Emergency Traffic Order (ETO) so that we can monitor the impact of the changes and whether they improve the safety of the junction. This is in line with The Mayor’s Vision Zero Action Plan which is central to our aim to eliminate all death and serious injuries on London’s roads. To achieve this, we must take steps to reduce road danger for everyone.

Purpose of the Scheme

There have been two fatal collisions (resulting in three fatalities) in recent years as a result of collisions between vehicles turning in and out of this junction. The changes we are making aim to remove the risk of right turning conflict and reduce the risk of conflict with left turning vehicles from Sevenoaks Road.

The changes include

• Reducing the westbound lane of A21 Sevenoaks Road (down to one lane) to improve filtering from London Road onto the A21 - filtering will now move to before the junction with Old London Road
• Banning the right-hand turning movement from the A21 into Sevenoaks Road and the right-hand turning movement going eastbound from Sevenoaks Road onto the A21

Next steps

This scheme is being implemented using an Emergency Traffic Order (ETO). This means that the changes will be implemented quickly and we will monitor and evaluate their impact.
