Update 1 August 2023

We ran a consultation from 30 May to 30 November 2022 on changes to the A21 between Lewisham and Catford in order to make it easier for people to cycle, walk and use the bus.

We received 1,294 responses to our consultation in total, including nine from stakeholders.

We have today published our consultation report to explain the outcomes of the consultation and confirm how we intend to move forward.

Having considered the data and the responses to the consultation, we have decided to retain the changes we made permanently.

In September 2020 we introduced temporary changes along the A21 between Catford and Lewisham, to encourage people to walk and cycle and to improve bus journey times. We recently decided to keep these changes as part of an experiment, to trial the scheme for up to 18 months. We hope that they will encourage more people to walk and cycle in this area

We want to know your views and experiences of these changes. We are holding a six-month consultation on the A21 Lewisham to Catford experimental scheme. You can reply by following the link to the survey below. We want this consultation to be accessible to everyone.

There is an Easy Read version of our materials in the ‘Documents’ section. There is also an Easy Read version of our survey. In the bottom right-hand corner, there is also a British Sign Language video which includes audio. If you need to translate this page into another language, please use the ‘Select language’ button in the bottom-left hand corner of this page.

On this page you can find out more about the scheme and what engagement and consultation you can expect from us. You can ask us a Question, respond to our Survey and register for scheme updates.

Why we made these changes

This section of A21 is a key bus corridor for traffic and in the top 10% in terms of bus usage. For the section of the A21 between Lewisham and Catford, around 50% of the trips made are less than 10km in length, so there is a significant potential for additional people to cycle here.

There have been a large number of collisions along the A21 involving a number of vulnerable people. In the year before we introduced the temporary scheme, there were 51 collisions on this section in which people were injured.
