Update 2 November 2023

On 18 September we published our consultation report about the changes we made in 2020 in Borough High Street and on London Bridge to help people walk and cycle. We explained that we have decided to retain the changes on a permanent basis.

We have now published our monitoring report for the scheme which summarises data about the scheme’s impact on numbers of people cycling, bus journey times and impacts on general traffic.  The report shows that numbers of people cycling on London Bridge have increased, while bus journey times have improved, and there has not been significant impact on general traffic.

Update 18 September 2023

In the summer of 2020, we made some changes to London Bridge and Borough High Street to help people to walk and cycle in the area. The changes were introduced temporarily as an emergency response to the coronavirus pandemic. In early 2022 we decided to keep the changes in place as an experiment so that we could continue to assess the impacts of the scheme.  From 27 July 2022 to 27 January 2023 we ran a six month public consultation to help us understand people’s experiences of the changes.

We received 1,938 responses including 27 from stakeholders. We would like to thank everyone who took part.

We considered all the responses we received and have published our consultation report including our response to the issues raised during the consultation.

We have decided to retain the changes permanently.  We will continue to monitor the performance of the scheme and continue to engage with local people and businesses to ensure the scheme continues to be of benefit to as many people as possible.

Update 4 Jan 2023

Background and our updated plans for London Bridge and Borough High Street

During the summer of 2020, as part of our response to the coronavirus pandemic, we made temporary changes on London Bridge and along Borough High Street to make it easier for people to walk, cycle, use the bus and to help people to safely social distance. in early 2022, we decided to keep these changes as part of an experiment, to further test the scheme for up to 18 months.

We want to know your views and experiences of these changes. We are holding a six-month consultation on the experiment. You can reply by following the link to the survey below. We want this consultation to be accessible to everyone.

Enhancements to Borough High Street

We have decided to consult on the changes for London Bridge and Borough High Street together as these locations are close to each other and the changes are complementary.

We have kept the temporary changes on London Bridge in place during the experimental period and we will be replacing the blue barriers which mark out the widened pavements in Borough High Street with semi-permanent materials - this comprises some new ‘bolt-on’ kerbs and asphalt which could be removed in future, if necessary. We will also be replacing line markings and signage. . These works will be taking place from 9 January 2023 to 28 April 2023. We have produced some images to show what the street might look like once these changes are finished which can be viewed above and below:
