SL13 - proposed express bus service between Hendon and Ealing Broadway, with changes to route E7

Proposals

SL13

The SL13 would operate as an express bus service, serving a limited number of key bus stops and rail interchanges, including in local town centres and other busy locations along its route. As part of the Superloop family, the SL13 service would be frequent, simple, inclusive, and reliable.

In Hendon, the SL13 would start and end at Hendon War Memorial. In Ealing Broadway its start and end point would be Haven Green. The following map shows proposed new route SL13 in its entirety. Also see the ‘Proposed bus stops and timings’ sections below.

Subject to the outcome of consultation, we would like the SL13 to operate using double-deck buses with the usual Superloop accessibility features and on-board facilities such as USB charging points and travel information.

E7

To create space for the SL13 at Haven Green, we propose to extend existing bus route E7.

The E7 currently operates between Ruislip Station and Ealing Broadway / Haven Green. We propose the section of its route in Ealing would extend further along New Broadway, to serve The Mall and Uxbridge Road – with a new start and end point at Ealing Common / Hanger Lane. The section of its route between Ruislip Station and New Broadway would not change, however it would no longer run via Spring Bridge Road, Haven Green and the north-south part of The Broadway by Ealing Broadway Station.

Proposed timings and bus stops

We propose the SL13 bus route would run:

• Seven days a week
• Operating between approximately 05:00 and 00:30
• Every 12 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes
• Every 15 minutes all evenings, on Sundays, and on early morning weekdays

The SL13 is not proposed to operate through the night.

Times shown are indicative for consultation purposes. Timetables would only be developed following consultation, and once a decision as to how to proceed is made.

The bus stops proposed are those currently well used by passengers on existing routes and those that serve key passenger destinations. However, we would like your feedback on whether these are the right places and bus stops for the new route.

What else we would like you to know

The SL13 would operate alongside other local bus routes, such as routes 112 and 232. Between Hendon and Ealing, the SL13 would increase the number and frequency of buses in the area, creating more room on board for passengers.

If the SL13 were to be introduced, subject to the outcome of consultation we would consider changing the frequency of routes E7, 112 and 232.

Frequency changes are not within the scope of consultation. They form part of our continual review of the bus network which helps ensure services operate more efficiently where they are needed most.

On route E7 (Ealing – Ruislip Station) we would:

• Operate buses every 15 minutes instead of every 12 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes (07:00 - 19:00)

On route 112 (Ealing – North Finchley) we would:

• Operate buses every 12 minutes instead of every ten minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes (07:00 - 19:00)
• Operate buses every 15 minutes instead of every 12 minutes during early mornings, in the evening and on Sundays

On route 232 (St Raphael’s Estate – Turnpike Lane) we would:

• Operate buses every 15 minutes across all early mornings as standard, increasing frequency from a bus every 20 or 30 minutes

Also subject to the outcome of consultation we would consider reviewing bus stop and/or bus stand arrangements to accommodate the SL13 and the potential extension to route E7 at the following locations:

• Brent Cross bus station
• Ealing Common / Hanger Lane
• Hendon War Memorial

How it impacts you

We have completed an initial Equalities Impact Assessment (EqIA). We do not expect the introduction of new route SL13 and an extension of the E7 would have a negative impact.

However, we also want to hear how you think the proposals may impact you, positively or negatively. Please visit the ‘tell us your views’ tab to take part in the consultation survey.

We use the EqIA to help us decide if, and how, we should proceed with these proposals.

After we’ve considered all comments, the EqIA will be reviewed and updated.

Positives

We believe a new bus route could benefit all passengers, including older people, disabled people, and people on low incomes. We consider the SL13 would:

• Provide quicker connections between key locations
• Provide new, direct travel connections from bus stops between Ealing and Brent Cross, to and from Hendon
• Reduce waiting time at selected bus stops
• Encourage more sustainable journeys in outer northwest London
• Offer a quicker and alternative bus options for some passengers currently using routes 112 and 232 with reduced journey times between Brent Cross and Ealing, the busiest sections of route 112

Potential concerns

There would be a journey adjustment for passengers currently using route E7 to access Haven Green in Ealing Broadway.

• The E7 would no longer serve Haven Green - it would not run via Spring Bridge Road, Haven Green and the north-south part of The Broadway by Ealing Broadway Station
• Passengers for Haven Green would use bus stops on The Broadway / The Mall instead
• The proposed change to the E7 applies to approximately 400 passengers on a typical weekday

Superloop and buses in London

The Superloop launched in 2023. It is helping to make buses a more popular option for more people. There are currently ten routes in service with new route BL1 between Waterloo and Lewisham town centre due to start operating this autumn.

Following public consultation earlier this year we have also confirmed that new routes SL11 between North Greenwich and Abbey Wood, and SL12 between Gants Hill and Rainham will be added to the Superloop network during 2026.

The Superloop is a key part of the Mayor of London and TfL’s commitment to improve the bus network in outer London.

We are keen to build on its success by connecting more parts of London. This would enable even more people to benefit from improved public transport connections and journey times.

Buses in London

London’s bus network is our most affordable, accessible, and available form of public transport and offers the main sustainable alternative to cars for those journeys that cannot easily be walked or cycled. It is also London’s most flexible mode of public transport.

We continuously review and adapt the bus network to reflect changing customer needs. This includes proposing changes to existing bus routes, so services operate in areas where our customers need them most. This includes areas such as the bus corridor along Hanger Lane to Ealing where bus services are already busy
