We plan to improve and upgrade Surrey Quays station to provide additional capacity and better links with the wider Surrey Quays/ Canada Water area. This will help to support and compliment the new Canada Water Masterplan development. You can share your views on our proposals in the Guestbook.
The purpose of the scheme
The Canada Water Masterplan is a transformational plan to develop the area of land between Surrey Quays and Canada Water station. It is a partnership between British Land, Southwark Council and the local community and aims to create an outstanding new town centre for Southwark complements the local area, making an active, positive, long-term contribution to local life. It aims to provide jobs, homes, offices, public spaces and facilities at Canada Water.
To support the Masterplan, we will be upgrading Surrey Quays station by:
Providing a new Northern station entrance and ticket hall on Lower Road
Linking to Surrey Quays Place, a new and attractive public realm space which will connect the new station entrance with the wider Canada Water Development
Constructing a new footbridge to link the new entrance and ticket hall with the existing station entrance
Providing lifts to both platforms to enabling step-free access from the street

British Land had already undertaken some engagement as part of Canada Water Master Planning. However, as we move into the next phases of design development for Surrey Quays station, we wanted to share our latest plans with you. This includes plans for the new Northern station entrance and ticket hall.

Please ensure that the development (including the connection over the railway) does not negatively interfere with the row of properties on Lower Road (starting with 181). When will more detailed plans be available and/or planning permission be submitted?

It is extremely disappointing that TFL has done little to address the capacity issues at the Canada Water Tube station. I strongly object to ALL initiatives that compound commuter crowding at this woefully under-platformed tube station and hope that TFL will realize that the scale of residential patrons is set to increase exponentially once the British Land development completes. Funding should be allocated to providing permanent capacity increases (similar to Bank station) vs. a topical improvement like adding an entrance.

With the new cycleway hopefully complete by the time the station opens, can you ensure that there is plenty of space to park bikes at the station and also ensure it's easy to get bikes onto the trains?

Very supportive of the new station entrance, much needed and well thought of. It would be good to understand how the new and old entrance will link to buses and where the cycle parking will be provided. There have been bike thefts in plain daylight at the Shopping Centre, the existing Sheffield stands in the public realm are not a sufficient provision.

Great idea. Strongly support. Good solution to overcrowded station. Will need good bike storage options and Cycle hire station. An additional entrance in the new development on the North side of Lower Road next to the proposed Platform 1 stairs would improve access to the station from the West side - but appreciate space will be a constraint here.

I strongly support the new entrance which will make travelling much easier. The new public space would also be a great improvement to the current situation. Two key thing that should be included in the proposal: - New Sheffield-type bike stands at the Northern entrance - Passenger toilet facilities

My question is one that I KNOW station staff get asked a lot. Currently, their answer is "Sorry, try the shopping centre", or "Try the pub" - which might sound fine, except the shopping centre closes before the station, and it's a helluva long way when you need to go. Also, exiting and reentering the station makes costing complicated.
The question is: "Where's the toilet?" and while we're at it: "Where's the Baby change?"
If you've seriously redesigned the station without ensuring that members of the public (including disabled people) have access to a toilet (including baby change facilities for FATHERS), they can access WITHOUT staff "doing them a favour", then you have failed to do the job. Every human urinates. If you doubt the importance of this, the solution is simple: Close off access to all staff loos in the network for a week, and see how long the strike lasts. If you have issues doing this, consider the fact it's EXACTLY what you're doing to your customers. So please: Loos with baby changes (and not just those accessible via radar key) at EVERY station being upgraded or redesigned.

Massive improvement on the current station especially with step free access. The station plan however needs to have a large amount of bicycle parking and a dedicated santander cycle hire station please.

As a long-standing renter in the area - I thoroughly support this long-overdue capacity increase to Surrey Quays station. The redevelopment and wider Canada Water masterplan carries my full support - although that support is increased further by the proposed investment in public transport.
It would be gratifying if consideration was given to improving facilities for cycling provision as part of the development. Current facilities in the area are poor - and with the ongoing development of the Southwark Council elements of Cycleway 4 along Lower Road, it would be a missed opportunity if provision for bicycles was not taken into account as part of this scheme.

This is a fantastic improvement for Surrey Quays and please deliver it ASAP so that finally, after so many years, passengers can benefit from using the new lifts and less crowded station. I fully support the project and design. Please also think about bicycle parking etc because provision around the existing station is poor and bicycles, including hire scheme bikes, end up left around the area and restricting / obstructing pavements.

Second entrance will really ease congestion at peak travel times at Surrey Quays station. So many people use the station to access the shopping centre and this will be convenient for them.
Hopefully we will get longer trains on the overground soon (if platforms are being extended) as peak times can be really busy, even post-pandemic levels.
