Barnes bus services – proposed changes

We are proposing to make changes to routes 209, 378 and 485 in Barnes, and to no longer run route 533. A direct bus service would be maintained between Hammersmith and Castelnau.

The consultation period has now closed. You can find updates on the scheme in the 'Latest news' section.

Proposals

We are proposing to extend route 209, which would then take over the majority of route 533, which would no longer run. The extended 209 would maintain a direct bus service to Hammersmith. We are also proposing changes to routes 378 and 485. All other bus routes in the Barnes area remained unchanged as part of these proposals.

You can view detailed maps of the current and proposed bus routes and you can read about the proposed changes below.

Barnes bus network changes map for current and proposed routes (Click on map for a larger version)

Route 209

Route 209 currently runs between Castelnau, Lonsdale Road and Mortlake, Avondale Road. It runs every 30 minutes (two buses per hour). If our proposals were to go ahead it would run between Hammersmith and Barnes Pond via Chiswick Bridge, Lonsdale Road and Castelnau, replacing the majority of route 533, particularly around the Castelnau area. The route would operate at the current frequency of route 533, with a bus every 15 minutes (four buses per hour), except during Monday – Friday peaks when it would run about every 17 minutes.

Route 378

Route 378 currently runs between Mortlake, Avondale Road, and Putney Bridge. If our proposals were to go ahead, this would continue but the 378 would also run to the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust London Wetland Centre. It would continue to run every 15 minutes (four buses an hour) except during Sunday mornings when it runs every 20 minutes.

We are considering potential changes to bus stopping arrangements for route 378 at Putney Bridge.

Route 485

Route 485 currently runs between Castelnau, Lonsdale Road, and Wandsworth, Mapleton Road. If our proposals were to go ahead, the route would serve Barnes High Street, The Terrace, Mortlake High Street and terminate at Mortlake, Avondale Road. Church Road and Castelnau would no longer be served by the 485. The route would continue to run every 30 minutes (two buses an hour).

These proposals are separate from our previous consultation about route 419. We published our consultation report for this scheme in August 2025. London Borough of Richmond are continuing to work on finalising options for bus stops on the 419.

Why do the proposed changes for the 209 not include stopping at the Sheen Lane/Mortlake station stop as the 533 currently does?

CSw14 asked about 1 month ago

The extended 209 service would continue to serve all the bus stops along Mortlake High Street and Lower Richmond Road which are currently served by route 533, including Sheen Lane/Mortlake station. Our maps are intended to indicate the proposed routes and key locations, and may not indicate every single bus stop. However, we will consider this in future when planning bus consultations in light of your question.

We have only included the services where changes are proposed in our materials.  We are not proposing any changes to route 33 as part of this consultation.

The proposed extended 209 service would take over the frequency of the current 533 service. The new 209 would be every 15 mins (4 bph) except for peak times when it would be every 17 mins (3.5 bph) which is what the current 533 operates at now.

Route 209 would turn around at the large, grassed traffic island with trees at the Church Road/Station Road/Barnes High Street junction. A bus has successfully tested this manoeuvre.

Route 209 would have the same operating hours as route 533 currently has and it would serve the Ship Lane bus stops.

This consultation only proposes changes to routes 209, 378, 485 and 533. We are not proposing any other changes to route 33 or to other bus routes in the area.

We are not proposing any changes to the 419 service as part of this consultation.

We published our consultation report on our previous consultation relating to the 419 earlier this year and you can find full details here
