We would like your feedback on proposals to expand the Superloop network with a new express bus service operating between Gants Hill and Ferry Lane in Rainham, via Romford. The route would be numbered SL12.

The consultation period has now closed. You can find updates on the scheme in the 'Latest news' section.

Proposals

The SL12 would operate as an express bus service with limited stops. It aims to reduce journey times and provide quicker orbital connections between local centres, railway stations, hospitals, and employment centres.

The following geographic map shows proposed route SL12 in its entirety.

We have updated this map to note the proposed SL12 routeing in Rainham is New Road/Dunedin Road - Dovers Corner roundabout - Bridge Road - Lamson Road - Ferry Lane. Proposed new bus stops for access to Rainham station south side would be situated on Lamson Road and Ferry Lane.

Bus stop information can be seen in more detail in the 'Proposed timings and bus stops' section below.

As part of the Superloop family, the SL12 service would be frequent, simple, inclusive, and reliable.

Subject to the outcome of consultation, we would like the SL12 to operate using double deck buses with the usual Superloop accessibility features and on-board facilities such as USB charging points and travel information.

The following map shows how proposed route SL12 would fit into an expanded Superloop network.

Proposed timings and bus stops

We propose the SL12 express service would run:

  • Seven days a week
  • Operating between approximately 05:00 and 00:30
  • Every 12 minutes during Monday to Saturday daytimes
  • Every 15 minutes all evenings, on Sundays, and on early morning weekdays

The SL12 is not proposed to operate through the night.

Times shown are indicative for consultation purposes. Timetables would only be developed following consultation, and once a decision as to how to proceed is made.

The following diagram shows proposed bus stops on route SL12:

The SL12 route aims to create direct journey links between key destinations in north-east and east London and would operate alongside other local bus routes, including popular routes into Ilford, Barkingside and Rainham.

The proposed route plans to provide:

  • Quicker access to Romford for shops, jobs, leisure, and the Elizabeth line

  • A convenient link to Elm Park and London Underground District Line services
  • Access to the Central line and the existing Superloop network in Redbridge

  • A direct bus connection between King George Hospital and Queens Hospital

  • A bus route for the first time into the Ferry Lane Industrial Estate supporting employers and employees in this area

Image showing `bus stop North Cheam London Road with Superloop logoThe bus stops proposed for use by the SL12 are those currently well used by passengers on existing routes and those that serve key passenger destinations.

However, we would like your feedback on whether these are the right places and bus stops for the new route.

You can let us know what you think of these proposals by completing our survey.

Bus standing space

In addition, subject to the outcome of consultation, we would need to provide space for the SL12 to terminate at both ends of its proposed route.

At Gants Hill we propose the bus to terminate on Perth Road. This would require some changes to the road highway layout which we would discuss with the London Borough of Redbridge.

At Ferry Lane we would work with the London Borough of Havering to identify a suitable terminus.

    Thank you for your question.

Our plans to introduce route SL12 are subject to the outcome of public consultation. Bus route operators and vehicle types would only be determined once the outcome of consultation is known, and a decision as to how we may proceed is made.

This question and answer facility is in place to assist people who may be preparing to comment on the proposals, and require some further information to assist them.

Public consultation invites people to formally submit views related to our SL12 proposals. We would encourage you to take part in our consultation survey and make your suggestion for the route to continue to Stratford there. We will respond to all feedback received when we publish our consultation report, later this year.

If you prefer not to take  our full survey, then a 'quick response' option is also available on the main consultation web page. Consultation closes on Friday 23 May.

    Thank you for your question.

Our plans to introduce route SL12 are subject to the outcome of public consultation. Following consultation we will take time to review the feedback we receive before making a decision as to whether or not to proceed with the new route.  Once a decision is reached a service introduction date would be planned. Comprehensive customer information would be issued in advance of any changes.

Thank you for your question. Our proposals for new route SL12 do not include changes to other local bus routes.

However, across London we continuously review and adapt the bus network to ensure we are meeting customer needs with the resources available.

Thank you for your question. Our proposal for the SL12 route is Gants Hill - Romford - Rainham. By holding this public consultation we are actively seeking views on the proposed route and bus stop locations. This process provides an opportunity to comment which can include suggestions for alternative start and end points for the route.

We would encourage you to take part in our consultation survey and submit your views on the proposed routeing there.

    Thank you for your question.

The SL12 proposal would enable same stop interchange from the SL12 onto the SL2 towards Ilford / North Woolwich Ferry at stop CH located on Cranbrook Road.

In the opposite direction, same stop interchange is not proposed. Instead it is suggested passengers would alight route SL2 at stop CN on Cranbrook Road and use the pedestrian underpasses or signalled crossings to board the SL12 at stop EC located on Eastern Avenue.

Thank you for your question . If, following the outcome of this consultation, we decide to proceed to introduce new Superloop route SL12, then usual London bus fares would apply.

As is the case with all London bus services, Oyster cards and contactless bank cards would be accepted on the SL12. This would include to and from proposed bus stops in Rainham towards Ferry Lane Industrial Estate in the London Borough of Havering.

Freedom passes, 60+ and other concessionary passes would also be valid, subject to the usual restrictions.

Additionally, the Transport for London ‘Hopper’ bus fare would apply. This provides the ability to make a second bus journey within 60 minutes of boarding the first, at no additional cost.
