We are proposing changes to bus routes 287 and 687.

Use the following buttons to find out more about what is proposed and how this may impact you. You can also view maps, ask questions, give feedback, and find out about other ways to get in touch and have your say.

You have until Sunday 13 July 2025 to give us your feedback.

Proposals

We are proposing to re-route the 287 and 687 bus routes along Maplestead Road and Goresbrook Road. We want to do this between the Lodge Avenue roundabout and Chequers Lane / Heathway junction. This means the 287 and 687 would no longer serve a section of the A13. Please see map A below for details.

Route 173 would continue to provide a high frequency bus route on the section of A13 that the 287 and 687 would no longer serve.

The proposal requires changes to be made to local roads to enable the buses to be re-routed. This consultation sets out both the proposed bus changes and highway changes.

About this consultation

This consultation is being carried out by us, Transport for London (TfL), in partnership with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (LBBD).

  • Bus service changes proposed in this consultation are the responsibility of Transport for London

  • Changes to roads and pavements are being proposed by the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

We’re working together to gather your views and make improvements that benefit everyone in the community.

More information on the proposed changes to bus routes 287 and 687

Bus route 287 runs between Barking Station and Rainham, Abbey Wood Lane, with a bus in each direction every 15 minutes Monday-Saturday daytimes, and a bus every 20 minutes on Sundays and in the evenings. Typically the hours of operation of the 287 are from approximately 05:45 to 00:30.

The 687 is a school service running between Barking Station and Dagenham Park School on school days only. It runs eastbound in the morning and westbound in the afternoon.

Red double-decker bus labeled '287 Barking' on a city roadAt present, both routes run along the A13 and the A1306 between Lodge Avenue roundabout and Chequers Lane/Heathway Junction, as does route 173.

Under these proposals, the 287 and 687 would continue to access Lodge Avenue Roundabout from Barking, but would then re-route along Lodge Avenue, turn right onto Maplestead Road, continue along Goresbrook Road and join the A1306 New Road at Chequers Corner eastbound (and vice versa for westbound journeys).

No changes are proposed to the route of the 173 as a result of this scheme.

More information on the proposed changes to the road and pavements

To improve the way buses serve Goresbrook Road and the communities that live along and close to it, we would need to make changes to roads in the area. This includes:

  • Install a bus gate at the junction of Goresbrook Road and the Heathway at Chequers Corner. This is pedestrianised with no access to vehicles at present. General traffic would not be permitted to use the bus gate: See Highway map 21 and Bus map C for details
  • Make changes to an emergency services access only barrier in the middle section of the scheme on Maplestead Road to allow buses to run along the road in both directions. A bus gate would be installed here allowing access to buses and the emergency services but not general traffic: See Highway map 3 and Highway map 4 for details
  • Amend the Maplestead Road/Lodge Ave junction to better facilitate bus movements: See Highway map 1 and Bus map B for details
  • Install accessible bus stops on Maplestead Road and Goresbrook Road. Indicative locations are shown on the accompanying maps. Final locations will be confirmed once feedback from the consultation has been analysed and incorporated: See Highway maps 1-21 and Bus map A, B and C for details
  • Make changes to the current car parking provision to accommodate these changes. Around 11 spaces are expected to be impacted: See Highway maps 1-21 for details
  • Install one way systems on a series of roads that have junctions with Maplestead and Goresbrook Roads – namely Aconbury Road, Canonsleigh Road, Ellerton Road, Flamstead Road, Greenfield Road, Wix Road, Elstow Road, Treswell Road, Rowdowns Road, Coombers Road: See Highway maps 1-21 for more details

Please note: Because the length of the road under the scope of this scheme is a long distance, we have divided this into sections to help you identify where you need to look. We move from east to west, starting at Lodge Avenue and ending at the Heathway junction at Chequers Corner.

Click on each section below to access detailed information and maps.

Section one – Lodge Avenue to Surmans Close featuring junction realignment, raised tables, a bus stop, removal of parking, a no-entry point, a one-way system and a ‘bus gate’

Section two – Surmans Close to Gale Street featuring raised tables, a Zebra crossing, bus stops, removal of parking, no-entry points and one-way systems

Section three – Gale Street to Elstow Road featuring bus stops, removal and reallocation of parking, raised tables, a no-entry points, one-way systems and a Zebra crossing

Section four - Elstow Road to Rowdens Road featuring addition and reallocation of parking, a no-entry point, one-way systems and bus stops

Section five - Rowdens Road – Junction of Goresbrook Road and the Heathway at Chequers Cornerfeaturing a Zebra crossing, one-way systems, no-entry points, raised tables, removal and reallocation of parking, bus stops and a ‘bus gate’

Under these proposals the junction of Maplestead Road with Lodge Avenue will be realigned to make it wider to allow buses to enter and exit it more easily. It is proposed to have a raised table (an elevated section of the road to match the height of the pavement) to slow buses entering and exiting the junction, making it easier and safer for people walking to cross here.

About 40 metres from the junction, we propose to install a bus stop for buses heading east, requiring the removal of two parking spaces. See Highway map 1 for more details.

About 90 metres further east of the bus stop, we propose to make Aconbury Road one-way and there will be no-entry from Maplestead Road, except for cycles. Both Aconbury Road and Castle Road will have raised tables at their junctions with Maplestead Road to slow vehicles, making it easier and safer for people walking to cross. A raised table will also be installed on Maplestead Road around 20m east of Castle Road. See zoomed Highway map 2 for more details.

About 50 metres east of this raised table, the right-turn off Maplestead Road (also called Maplestead Road) is proposed to have a raised table at its junction. Another raised table is proposed about 40m east of this on Maplestead Road, requiring the removal of three parking spaces. Removal of the speed cushion and reconstruction of the road 20m west of this raised table will require the removal of one parking space. See zoomed Highway map 3 for more details.

About 30 metres further east of the raised table, Maplestead Road becomes Goresbrook Road and we propose to install a bus only restriction in both directions; these are commonly known as a ‘bus gate’. This restriction will be enforced by a camera and any driver of unauthorised vehicles driven through the 'bus gate' would get a fine. This ‘bus gate’ would still be open to emergency services, as is the current situation. The parking spaces here will remain accessible. See zoomed in Highway map 4 for more details.

About 100 metres east of the bus gate, Canonsleigh Road will be made one-way with entry from Goresbrook Road. A raised table covering both these roads will be installed at this junction, along with a Zebra crossing on the eastern side of the junction, leading to a new park entrance, about 21 metres east of which, there will be a bus stop for westbound buses. See zoomed in Highway map 5 for more details.

About 20 metres east of Surmans Close, we propose to install a bus stop for eastbound buses, which will require the removal of two parking spaces. See zoomed in Highway map 5 for more details.

About 90 metres further east from this bus stop, a raised table will be installed covering the junction of Goresbrook Road and Ellerton Road. Ellerton Road will be one-way and there will be no entry except for cycles from Goresbrook Road. See zoomed in Highway map 6 for more details.

About 150 metres east of Ellerton Road, Flamstead Road will be made one-way, except for cycles and about 55 metres east of this junction, a raised table will be introduced. See zoomed in Highway map 7 for more details.

Around 70 metres east of this raised table, Greenfield Road will be made one-way, with no-entry from Goresbrook Road, except for cycles, and a raised table covering the whole of this junction will be installed. See zoomed in Highway map 8 for more details.

About 85m east of this raised table, a bus stop is proposed for westbound buses, outside the Jo Richardson Community School. See zoomed in Highway map 9 for more details.

About 60 metres east of the Gale Street mini-roundabout, we propose to install a bus stop for eastbound buses, which will require the removal of three parking spaces. See zoomed in Highway map 10 for more details.

Around 120 metres east of this bus stop is Wix Road, which will be made one-way with no-entry from Maplestead Road, except for cycles. A raised table covering the whole of this junction will be installed. See zoomed in Highway map 11 for more details.

About 350m east of Wix Road, at the junction of Elstow Road and Richard Ryan Place with Goresbrook Road, a raised table will be installed, covering the whole junction. Elstow Road will be made one way, except for cycles, with entry from Goresbrook Road.

We propose to install a bus stop about 30 metres west of Elstow Road, which will require the removal of two parking spaces. One new parking space will be installed on Elstow Road, about 10 metres in from the junction and one new parking space will be introduced on Goresbrook Road about 60 metres east of this junction.

We propose to install a bus stop about 35 metres east of Richard Ryan Place. A raised table with combined Zebra and cycle crossing is proposed about 20 metres west of the junction of Vincent Road with Goresbrook Road and a new parking space will be installed around 20 metres in from the junction. See zoomed in Highway map 14 for more details.

About 40 metres east of Vincent Road, just beyond Dagenham Avenue, three new parking spaces will be installed on the northern pavement and six new parking spaces will be installed on the southern pavement opposite. See zoomed in Highway map 15 for more detail.

About 140 metres further east of Dagenham Avenue, Treswell Road’s western junction will be made one-way, except for cycles, with no-entry from Goresbrook Road.

About 60 metres east of Treswell Road’s western junction with Goresbrook Road, a raised table will be installed covering the whole of the junction of Goresbrook Road with Starmans Close. See zoomed in Highway map 16 for more details.

About 140 metres east from Starmans Close, opposite the eastern junction of Treswell Road, a bus stop will be installed for westbound buses, requiring the removal of four parking spaces. Treswell Road will be made one-way, except for cycle, with entry from Goresbrook Road, See zoomed in Highway map 17 for more details.

About 70 metres further east of Treswell Road a bus stop will be installed for eastbound buses, requiring the removal of two parking spaces, these will be replaced by a one new parking space about 50 metres east of this bus stop and three new parking spaces opposite, about 25 metres west of Burdetts Road. See zoomed in Highway map 18 for more details.

About 60 metres east of Burdetts Road is Rowdons Road, which will be made one-way, except for cycles, with entry from Goresbrook Road. A raised table will be introduced across the whole junction, which will include a Zebra crossing about 10 metres west of Rowdons Road. See zoomed in Highway map 19 for more details.

Eight new parking spaces will be installed about 40 metres east of Rowdons Road on the southern pavement. Coombes Road will be made one-way, except for cycles, with no-entry from Goresbrook Road. See zoomed in Highway map 19 for more details.

The existing raised table that is located outside St. Martin’s Church about 20 metres east of Coombes Road will be made wider and longer. The eight angled (echelon) parking spaces located around 20 metres east of the raised table will be turned into ten parallel parking spaces (two extra spaces), to provide enough space for buses to pass each other.

The raised table opposite 33 Goresbrook Road that starts about 10 metres east of the last angled parking space will be removed to widen the road and on the southern side of the road, the twelve angled parking spaces, which start about 10 metres east of the raised table, will be changed to twelve parallel parking spaces.

On the northern side of the road, the nineteen angled parking spaces will be converted to twelve parallel parking spaces (seven spaces removed). See zoomed in Highway map 20 for more details.

Directly adjacent to the alleyway between 11 and 19a Goresbrook Road, a bus stop is proposed for westbound buses. About 25 metres further east, a bus stop for eastbound buses is proposed. About 10 metres west of this bus stop, a loading bay for businesses will be installed in place of existing angled parking (eight spaces removed). Directly opposite this loading bay, three disabled parking spaces will be installed. About 25 metres to the east of this bus stop, a ‘bus gate’ will be installed.

We propose to reinstate the vehicular access from Goresbrook Road to the junction with Chequers Lane / Heathway and Ripple Road, but for buses and emergency service vehicles only, to be enforced by camera. A raised table covering the whole of the area will be introduced. This will extend about 15 metres west into Goresbrook Road from the point the bus gate restrictions begin and covering the ‘slip road’ access from Chequers Lane/ Heathway.

There will be loss of three parking spaces from re-arrangement of the parking on the slip road. About 10 metres from the new junction of Goresbrook Road with Chequers Lane/ Heathway, a traffic light crossing will be installed, allowing people walking to cross safely at this point. Please see zoomed in Highway map 21 for details.
