Background

London’s bus network is our most affordable, accessible, and available form of public transport and offers the main sustainable alternative to cars for those journeys that cannot easily be walked or cycled. It is also London’s most flexible mode of public transport.

We continuously review and adapt the bus network to reflect changing customer needs. This includes responding to serving new homes and emerging new communities such as those in Kidbrooke Village.

Our proposals are designed to support the ongoing regeneration of Kidbrooke Village which has seen changes to the local road network and in time will see the closure of Cambert Way to enable the delivery of new housing.

The proposals seek to simplify bus routeings and better serve the station and local amenities on Pegler Square.

The scheme means the bus stops and stand on Ryan Close would no longer be served by buses. This would happen anyway, because a future phase of development will close Cambert Way leading to Ryan Close.

Passengers wishing to access Ryan Close would be provided for at alternative bus stops along the proposed new bus route, with stops on Tudway Road being the closest and within 400 metre walk. Proposed bus stop names are indicative for consultation purposes.

At present this is served in both directions by routes 178 and 335, and the B16 on the northbound routeing only. Under this proposal, routes 178, 336 and B15 would no longer use this stop.

The alternative for B16 passengers would be bus stop ‘W’ ‘Weigall Road South Side’ which is 160 metres away.

The alternative for route 335 would be bus stop ‘E’ Weigall Road North Side 115 metres away.

The alternative for 178 passengers would be stop L ‘Cranfield Walk’. This stop is 315 metres away to the north with good pedestrian access to the western side of Kidbrooke Village). Alternatively, 178 passengers may use bus stop ‘N’ ‘Tudway Road’ which is 270 metres to the south.

    Bus Stops

The proposed changes to the bus routeings mean changes to bus stops. Our maps show the indicative locations of bus stops in the future. It also includes the removal of one bus stop. The final positioning of bus stops are subject to further discussions with Berkeley Homes and local highway constraints.

Providing the right bus services for Kidbrooke Village’s development

There is a substantial amount of development that has happened in recent years in the Kidbrooke area, including redevelopment of the Ferrier Estate now known as Kidbrooke Village, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

We have worked with the Royal Borough of Greenwich and its partners to develop proposals for a permanent bus network that would be introduced to the area in stages, with minimal disruption to current bus journeys. The proposals are designed to be introduced over time as the development expands, new roads are built and people move into the area.

The pattern of development of Kidbrooke Village has meant that the layout of roads and uses of land has changed and will continue to change over time, with some bus routes having to be changed as a result.

The development is now at a stage where some roads currently used by buses will soon be closed to allow the next stages of the development to proceed, with other roads soon to be fully open, allowing more direct routes to be available to buses. Our proposals take into account these road closures and openings.

Why do the bus routes need to change?

The current 178, 335 & B16 bus routes through Kidbrooke Village via Cambert Way and Ryan Close were designed to maintain connections to homes. These roads will be permanently closed to permit the next stages of the development.

There has always been a clear aspiration for buses to not simply keep to A2213 Kidbrooke Park Road but instead have buses serve the new and existing housing (i.e. to the east and west of Kidbrooke Park Road, instead of just up and down it).

Because of this, routes 178 and B16 currently operate in a more direct (progressive) routeing southbound towards (via Ryan Close). However, northbound the routes loop backwards on themselves to serve Ryan Close. Route 335 also loops backwards on itself this in both directions.

The proposal is to simplify bus routeings through the east side of Kidbrooke Village, improve access to the railway station and shops and improve journey times for through passengers.

Return to the main page for details of what is proposed, including a series of proposals (with maps) showing where each bus route goes now and what is proposed.
